In order to manage the new jail podular setting and the old jail linear setting with various levels of security, jail staff had to assume responsibility and training in inmate housing, classification of inmates, intake and release functions. The jail shall further strive to provide an atmosphere, which is safe where the rights of inmates are protected, as well as promote the humane care of inmates. The purpose of the Lake County Corrections Division is to provide secure incarceration and detention for the following: felons, gross misdemeanants, misdemeanants, pre-trial detainees, juvenile non-status offenders, witnesses and others being detained in protective custody. Lake County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Crown Point Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years.
